| Damien Hirst is Rewriting the Rules of the Art Market A two-part article by Roger Bevan and Sarah Thornton, The Art Newspaper
The final frontier protecting contemporary art galleries from the relentless encroachment of the auction houses has been emphatically breached with the announcement that Damien Hirst is creating an exhibition of new works for display and sale at the London headquarters of Sotheby’s. The preview of "Beautiful Inside My Head Forever," as the exhibition is titled, will launch the new art market season on 5 September while the auction itself is scheduled to take place over two dates, 15 and 16 September, suggesting that a catalogue of at least 40 major works will be offered on the evening of the earlier date with an extended day session of more affordable material including smaller paintings, preparatory drawings and editioned objects to follow.

Beautiful Baumeister Nina P. West, Artfact.com
Willi Baumeister is hardly a household name. Even in the art world, mentioning the German artist, once labeled a "degenerate" by Hitler, is likely to lead to a room full of blank stares, especially in the U.S. But, as the art market's attention turns to the so-called "second string" of European modernists, his name is becoming more familiar and his work more sought after. Last month, a Baumeister painting sold in Zurich for over $500,000 at Galerie Koller, Switzerland's leading auction house. The painting, an abstract work from 1954, sold to a very pleased German collector who outbid numerous people in the room and on the phone. Click here to continue reading...

| Borrowing with Fine Art as Collateral By Kate Taylor, The New York Sun
With the stock market volatile and housing in a slump, many wealthy individuals are looking to tap another kind of equity — the kind hanging on their walls. Specialists at banks and auction houses say that more of their clients recently are interested in borrowing against their art collections. "We are seeing increased activity in art financing transactions," a senior vice president in structured lending at U.S. Trust, John Arena, said. Some of his clients are borrowing in order to purchase more art, he said, or because they see opportunities in the stock market or, to a lesser degree, real estate.Click here to continue reading... |

SCOPE Hamptons July 24th-27th, 2008, East Hampton, NY scopehamptons.com
The New York art scene is in its annual summer hibernation; perhaps everyone's in the Hamptons? Well, starting tonight, there will be a healthy mix of emerging artists, up-and-coming gallerists, and experienced collectors all mingling in that star-studded summer get-away. Alexis Hubschman's annual fair has been bringing emerging galleries out to the East End of Long Island for the past 6 years. Their mission is to help build a "flourishing collector base in the contemporary art market" and with sales of nearly $100 million, they seem to be doing their job. Furthermore, this year's Collector Mentorship Auction will not only allow seasoned collectors to share their knowledge with their younger counterparts, but will also benefit two fantastic arts-related projects, The Girl Project and The Arctic Circle Project.

Melbourne Art Fair
July 30th-August 3rd, 2008, Melbourne, AU www.artfair.com.au/2008_interim/htm/interim.htm
The Melbourne Art Fair is one of Australia's most important art events. Every other year, the Melbourne Art Fair Foundation scoops up the best and brightest young Australian artists and exhibits their work. The 2006 installment had a record attendance of 26,000 people and featured 86 galleries from across Australia, the Asia Pacific Region and Europe. The fair's mandate is to promote the work of living artists; through their Project Rooms and Melbourne Art Fair Commission, they certainly offer opportunities for exposure for emerging artists in the Asia Pacific region.

America's Next Top Artist? TV land
From the woman who brought us the most important film of 2008, comes a new series, American Artist. Slated to appear on Bravo, Sarah Jessica Parker's show will pretty much be a spin-off of, um, all those other shows on Bravo, except instead of cooking, sewing and hair-styling, there will be painting! Photography! Industrial design! As a savvy graduate student I know recently remarked, reality television is the new MFA. And, really, what will be the fabulous prize? A spread in Art Forum ? A solo show at the Whitney? Sigh. So many questions.

FAAN fineartadoption.net
|
I really like free things. And fineartadoption.net gives away some pretty swell contemporary art. The Web site is the brain-child of Brooklyn artist Adam Simon, and is supported by some great organizations, including Art in General. Although it started as a practical enterprise (Simon needed to get rid of some work), it is also a somewhat utopian, or at least idealistic, one. It acts as a kind of counterpoint to the art market and puts more control in the hands of the project's artists, who can choose the rightful owner for their work. The adoption process sounds a little like adopting a pet and a little like Internet dating. Either way, the site is very easy to navigate, if a little drab. And you can even read adoption stories; kind of like on that Animal Planet show! Art is life is reality television, folks. |
|
Best: You don't have to buy anything!
Worst: The Web site isn't all that pretty and I like pretty things almost as much as I like free things.

This is the Day
Today's Scripture
“This is the day the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24).
Today's Word from Joel and Victoria
Every day that we are given is a precious gift from Almighty God. We should wake up every morning with a grateful attitude, full of faith and expectancy for what the Lord has in store. Sure, you may be facing some challenges in your every day life, or maybe things aren’t going the way you planned, but remember, each new day is a chance to stand strong in the midst of adversity and see the faithfulness of God. Every new day is an opportunity to praise and thank Him; to magnify your God instead of magnifying your problems. This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it! Be glad that God has promised to never leave us or forsake us. Be glad that God has given you a sound, healthy mind. Rejoice that He is making a way where there seems to be no way! As you focus on the gift of every day and rejoice in what God has done in your life, you will begin to experience His increase and blessings. You’ll rise up higher and set the course to live in victory all the days of your life!
A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, today I choose to rejoice in You. Thank You for this day and for every opportunity that You’ve given me to bless and praise You. I give You everything I am today and always. In Jesus Name’. Amen.

Completely Satisfied
Today's Scripture
“Blessed, fortunate, happy and spiritually prosperous…are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, uprightness and right standing with God, for they shall be completely satisfied” (Matthew 5:6 AMP).
Today's Word from Joel and Victoria
God longs to pour out his abundant blessing on every area of your life. He wants you to live completely satisfied. When you hunger and thirst for righteousness--God’s way of doing things--then you will live in complete satisfaction. You direct your hunger by choosing what you focus on. For example, if you focus on your favorite food, if you start thinking about it early in the morning, and all throughout the day, chances are, by the end of the day you’ll be eating it! What you give your attention to, you will desire. In the same way, the more you give your attention to God and His Word, the more you will hunger for Him. Just like the scripture promises, when you hunger for righteousness, you will be completely satisfied. The world offers so many things for you to give your attention to, but they aren’t things that will satisfy. You might think you want a particular car, or certain clothes, or live in a particular neighborhood. There’s nothing wrong with those things, but understand that “things” won’t ever satisfy you. Recognize that only God will satisfy you. As you hunger for Him, you’ll live in peace and blessing and live completely satisfied all the days of your life!
A Prayer for Today
Father in Heaven, I come to You today, I ask for forgiveness for allowing anything to capture my heart and attention more than You. I choose today to give You top priority, and choose to hunger for Your righteousness. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

The Place of Blessing
Today's Scripture
“Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah: Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. You will drink from the brook, and I have ordered the ravens to feed you there” (I Kings 17:2-4).
Today's Word from Joel and Victoria
As a child of the Most High God, your steps are ordered by Him. He has a specific place of blessing prepared for you. When you live a life of obedience to the Word of God, He promises to supply every one of your needs. Just as God directed Elijah to his place of blessing, God is directing you, too. He’s aligning the right opportunities for you and causing the right people to come along your path to help you get ahead. He’s constantly working behind the scenes on your behalf. But you have to do your part to keep your heart open by following His Word and keeping an attitude of faith and expectancy. A major key to keeping your heart in the right place is choosing peace and unity. The Bible says that when we live in unity, there He has commanded the blessing. And when your heart is in the place of blessing, the rest of your life will be in the place of blessing, too!
A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, I come to You with a grateful heart. Thank You for leading me and directing my steps. Help me to see others the way You see them so I can honor You and live in unity all the days of my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Rest for Your Soul
Today's Scripture
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28).
Today's Word from Joel and Victoria
God wants to give you rest. He wants to refresh and restore your soul, which is your mind, will and emotions. It’s so easy to get caught up in the busyness of life, and before long, your mind, will and emotions are so “spun up” that you can barely think straight! But even among the hustle of life, you can find rest, ease and relaxation. God wants you to enjoy your life. That’s why He tells us to come to Him. When you understand that God wants to take care of everything that concerns you, you will be able to find rest. Imagine that someone came up to you today and said, “Give me all your monthly bills, I’m going to pay them.” You’d get pretty excited, wouldn’t you? But it wouldn’t happen until you did your part to give that person your bills. They couldn’t pay them for you if you never release them. In the same way, when we release our cares and concerns to God, He promises to take care of them. Choose today to release your cares to the Lord. As you do, you’ll find that rest that He promises, and you’ll live the abundant life He has for you!
A Prayer for Today
Father in heaven, today I humbly come to you. I choose to cast my cares on You so that I can live in Your rest. Thank You for Your goodness to me. Help me find ways to share Your goodness with those around me today. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Thriving not Surviving
You're not a survivor. You are more than a conqueror.
It's easy to get into a survival mode. When times get tough and things aren't going our way, it's tempting to just settle where we are, not believe for increase and not believe to go any further. It's tempting to think, "If I can just hold on. If I can just make it through another year." If we're not careful, we'll develop a survival mentality to where we're not releasing our faith. We're not believing to rise any higher. We're just hoping to maintain. We'd be satisfied if we could just break even. But we're not supposed to break even. We're supposed to break through to a new level, to more of God's favor, increase and promotion.
God says in the book of Jeremiah that if we'll keep the Lord as our trust and confidence, God will prosper us even in the desert. He'll prosper us even in difficult times. That means when others are going under God says you'll go over!
God can prosper us even in the desert if we'll just be bold enough to believe. You were created to thrive in life! Won't you believe that for your life today?

Avoid Strife
Today's Scripture
“ It is an honor for a man to cease from strife ” (Proverbs 20:3)
Today's Word from Joel and Victoria
Strife is a very destructive force. It can creep into relationships by starting small, maybe through a comment or a wrong look from someone, and can then escalate into something much bigger. But when you choose to cease from strife and overlook an offense, you are acting honorably, and you are honoring God. How do you avoid strife? The Bible tells us that love covers over many offenses. It means that you give people the benefit of the doubt. You consider what they may be going through over how they reacted to you. Maybe someone was short with you at the office, but they may have a loved one in the hospital, or they may have some other concern. Instead of getting upset, walk in love—be patient, be kind to them. Choose to avoid strife. Look for ways to walk in unity with the people in your life. The Bible says that He has commanded the blessing when we walk and live in unity. Choose unity today and watch the hand of the Lord move mightily on your behalf!
A Prayer for Today
Father God, today I choose Your ways. I invite Your plan to unfold in my life. Help me to avoid strife so I can walk in peace and unity and honor you all the days of my life. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Give Cheerfully
Today's Scripture
“Let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (II Corinthians 9:7)
Today's Word from Joel and Victoria
God has set up a system to bless and prosper you; it’s the system of sowing and reaping. When you give, God promises that blessings will come back to you in greater measure. Just like sowing a seed in the ground produces an abundant harvest, when you sow financially, you will reap a harvest of blessing in your life in return. Notice in the verse that God is concerned more about how we give than what we give. He loves it when you give with a cheerful heart because that shows that you are trusting in His promises. It shows that you love Him and love following His commands. When you understand that God wants to bless you, you can’t help but give with a cheerful heart! Meditate on His wonderful blessings today and allow that joyful attitude to rise up in your heart. Be a cheerful giver and expect His increase and blessing in every area of your life.
A Prayer for Today
Father in heaven, today I come before You giving You all that I am. I choose to be a cheerful giver because I love You. Help me to honor You in everything I say and do. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

The Power of Peace
Today's Scripture
“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).
Today's Word from Joel and Victoria
No matter what may be going on all around you today, you can still live in peace. The scripture encourages us to not let our hearts be troubled. In other words, don’t meditate on all the negative things in this world to the point that it steals your peace. If you have fear, worry or anxiety about anything, recognize that those feelings aren’t from God because He has promised to give you a spirit of power, love and a sound mind. There is tremendous power in peace. When you are at peace internally, you can think more clearly. You can hear the voice of God more easily. You’ll make better decisions. Even your physical body responds to peace. The enemy knows this, and his goal is to steal your peace. He tries to set you up to get upset. But when you choose to receive God’s peace, then no weapon formed against you shall prosper. You can live in peace, you can live in joy, and you can live the abundant life God has for you.
A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your gift of peace in my life. I choose to receive Your peace in my heart and hold it close to me always. I receive Your Word as truth and life to my soul. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Cast Your Cares
Today's Scripture
"Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you" (I Peter 5:7).
Today's Word from Joel and Victoria
God cares so much about you today. Not only does He love and care about you, He cares about the things that concern you as well. If you have concerns, worry or anxiety about something in your life today; finances, relationships, your job or anything else, know that your Heavenly Father already has a plan to take care of those things for you. It’s a good plan, and He wants to show Himself strong on your behalf. The scripture reminds us that the lilies of the field and the birds of the air are cared for, how much more will your Heavenly Father take care of you? Make the decision today to cast all of your anxiety on Him by choosing to trust that He is going to take care of you. Refuse to dwell on your problems and don’t allow them to steal your peace and joy any longer. Instead, choose to meditate on His Word and confess God’s promises over your life. As you cast your cares on Him, you’ll experience His peace and joy, and you will live the life of blessing He has in store for you.
A Prayer for Today
Father in heaven, thank You for caring for me. I choose today to cast my cares on You and trust that You are working behind the scenes on my behalf. I bless and magnify You today. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Soros: Fannie, Freddie Crisis Not the Last
|
Monday, July 14, 2008 3:31 PM
| Article Font Size |
|
NEW YORK -- Billionaire investor George Soros said on Monday the crisis over major U.S. mortgage financiers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will not be the last, and that the deepening credit crisis is a "serious one" that will impact an already slowing U.S. economy.
"This incident (with Fannie and Freddie) is not the last one," Soros told Reuters in a telephone interview.
The U.S. Treasury agreed on Sunday to raise Fannie and Freddie's credit lines above the existing $2.25 billion apiece and buy shares, if asked, to strengthen their finances. The Federal Reserve offered to let the shareholder-owned but government-sponsored enterprises borrow at the rate it charges banks for direct loans.
"Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae have a solvency crisis, not a liquidity crisis," said Soros. "There's no problem in their borrowing. And in fact, insofar as there is a problem, the Fed is there to provide the liquidity."
That said, both Fannie and Freddie are "extremely leveraged," he said. "The deterioration in the housing market, the foreclosures, are going to cause losses which exceed their equity," said Soros, whose famous bet against the British pound earned his Quantum Fund $1 billion in 1992.
In afternoon trade on Monday, Fannie Mae shares were down 3.75 percent while Freddie Mac shares were down 12 percent.
"This is a very serious financial crisis and it is the most serious financial crisis of our lifetime," Soros said. "It is inevitable that it is affecting the real economy. It is an idle dream to think that you could have this kind of crisis without the real economy being affected," he added.

| 7월 15일 Bernanke: economy faces 'numerous difficulties'
By JEANNINE AVERSA, AP Economics Writer 9 minutes ago
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told Congress Tuesday the fragile economy is facing "numerous difficulties" including persistent strains in financial markets, rising joblessness and housing problems — despite the Fed's aggressive interest rate reductions and other fortifying steps.
At the same time, Bernanke, testifying before the Senate Banking Committee, sounded another warning that rising prices for energy and food are elevating inflation risks.
The situation, he said, poses "significant challenges" for Fed policymakers as they try to chart the best course for keeping the economy growing, while making sure inflation doesn't dangerously flare up. All the economy's problems, including slumping home values, which threaten to make people feel less wealthy and less inclined to spend in the months ahead, represent "significant downside risks" to economic growth.
Over the rest of this year, the economy will grow "appreciably below its trend rate" mostly because of continued weakness in housing markets, high energy prices and tight credit conditions.
On Wall Street, stocks slumped. The Dow Jones industrials were down around 50 points, after suffering steeper losses earlier in the morning.
Inflation has remained high and "seems likely to move temporarily higher in the near term," he warned.
Indeed, before Bernanke delivered his twice-a-year comprehensive economic assessment to Congress, the Labor Department reported wholesale prices jumped 1.8 percent in June. That left inflation rising over the past year at the fastest pace in more than a quarter-century.
"Given the high degree of uncertainty" about the Fed's economic outlook, Fed policymakers will need to carefully assess incoming information about inflation and economic growth, he said.
The Fed in June signaled an end to its nearly year long rate-cutting campaign because of growing concerns about inflation. Bernanke kept up his tough anti-inflation talk on Tuesday but stressed many other problems that could short circuit economic growth. He seemed to be keeping his options open in terms of rates. Given all the risky cross currents, economists believe the Fed will leave rates alone when they meet on Aug. 5.
Righting wobbly financial markets is key to getting the economy back on track, he said.
"In general, healthy economic growth depends on well-functioning financial markets," Bernanke said. "Consequently, helping the financial markets to return to more normal functioning will continue to be a top priority," he said.
Bernanke's testimony comes just two days after the Fed and the Treasury Department came to the rescue of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, offering to throw them a financial lifeline.
The companies hold or guarantee more than $5 trillion in mortgages — almost half of the nation's total. The Bush administration is asking Congress to temporarily increase lines of credit to Fannie and Freddie and to let the government buy their stock. The Fed has offered to let the companies draw emergency loans.
The pledges of aid have raised concerns about the government's role in such financial problems and the risk to taxpayers.
Strengthening regulatory oversight of Fannie and Freddie, Bernanke said, is "job one." Congress is moving ahead on a broad housing rescue package that includes provisions to tighten regulation over the two companies. Bernanke said legislative efforts to help stabilize the housing market — the biggest threat to the economy — are of vital importance.
Bernanke, in the first day of back-to-back appearances on Capitol Hill, said investors are nervous in general because of the cloudy outlook for the economy and credit conditions, feeding a vicious cycle that can be hard to break.
"Many financial markets and institutions remain under considerable stress, in part because the outlook for the economy and thus for credit quality, remains uncertain."
The Fannie and Freddie troubles came on the heels of the failure of IndyMac, a big bank. "Its failure ... was inevitable," Bernanke said because the bank was weighted down by low-quality mortgages. "All banks are being challenged by credit conditions now," he said, adding that the Fed is keeping close tabs on the nation's banking sector.
And, earlier this year, a run on investment bank Bear Stearns pushed the company to the edge of bankruptcy and into a takeover by JPMorgan Chase, which was backed financially by the Fed. That was a controversial move that prompted critics to call it a government bailout, putting taxpayers money at risk.
Bernanke defended its decisions in the cases of Bear Stearns as well as Fannie and Freddie, and rebuffed claims that the government is helping Wall Street at the expense of Main Street. If problems aren't contained, they can ripple throughout the economy, hurting everyone, he said. "Financial stability is critical to economic stability."
The Fed, in new projections, now believes inflation will be higher this year than previously thought, with prices rising as high as 4.2 percent under one inflation measure.
Growth for the year will be sluggish — at best 1.6 percent growth — but not as bad as previously forecast, helped by the government's $168 billion stimulus, including rebates. The unemployment rate, which could rise as high as 5.7 percent this year, is the same as earlier projections.

| " I have just read news about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac 's financial problem. I do remember that these companies' stocks are also Mr. Buffett's favorite stocks. The true purpose of those two companies is a mortgage interest rate stabilizator. It means, if the mortgage interest rate at the market is too high, Fannie and Freddie will make it a little bit lower, and otherwise. Closing down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will give short term solution but will bring long term negative effect for the people's (citizen) interest. It is very dangerous if mortgage interest rate is 100% driven fully by the market, since housing is one of three (food, clothes, housing) primary need of every citizen in every country. But, on the other hand, if US government has to bail out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac from US government's wallet, it will be dangerous also, because the oil price is rising so high so that US Government has to make sure there is enough free cashflow on government's wallet for anticipating rising cash out flow. If I am Mr. Bernanke or Mr. Paulson, I will ask investment banker firm to help Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac convert some of their mortgage loan portfolio to equity based financing such as Real Estate Investment Trust (REITT) and sell it to public. By this way, US Government's wallet safe ( 1st WIN), Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac safe (2nd WIN), and the people safe (3rd WIN). It is very important for a government to make sure the price of primary needs of the people achievable. This is only opinion from borrowing Mr. Bernanke and Mr. Paulson's point of view. "

Jim Rogers: Shut Down Fannie, Freddie

Jim Rogers, the famed commodities investor who has repeatedly said he is short all financial stocks, thinks government-backed mortgage lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac should shut their doors.
The Federal Reserve on Sunday — hours ahead of the Asian trading open — said it would back the mortgage giants, which between them hold or finance half of all U.S. home loans.
"These companies were going to go bankrupt if they hadn't stepped in to do something, and they should go bankrupt,'' Rogers told Bloomberg News.
The banks are "basically insolvent" and should be allowed to fail, Rogers said.
That's not likely to happen.
The Fed gave its New York arm the authority to lend to the banks at 2.25 percent, the rate Wall Street gets, if need be. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said the government would expand credit and even invest in the companies if necessary.
"Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac play a central role in our housing finance system and must continue to do so in their current form as shareholder-owned companies," Paulson told reporters Sunday.
"Their support for the housing market is particularly important as we work through the current housing correction."
Rogers says taxpayers will have to come up with the money to save Fannie and Freddie, which hold or finance half of the $12 trillion U.S. mortgage market.
This comes on top of $400 billion already spent to rescue private investment bank Bear Stearns, Rogers warned earlier this month.
"If the system is so fragile that the collapse of the fifth-largest investment bank in America could bring the whole thing down, what’s going to happen in a few years when the No. 2 or No. 1 banks go bad?" Rogers asked.
In the earlier commentary, Rogers said he was short all financial stocks through an exchange-traded fund (ETF).
"I'm short on the investment bank ETF, which means I’m short on all of them," Rogers said then.
"Some of these companies have horrendous balance sheets."

Government Steps In, Bails Out Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac
|

|
The government said its plan to bail out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is meant to signal it is prepared to take all necessary steps to prevent the credit market troubles that erupted last year with losses from subprime mortgages from engulfing financial markets. |
WASHINGTON -- Scrambling to bolster eroding investor confidence, the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department announced steps to brace slumping mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
The companies' shares have plunged as losses from their mortgage holdings threatened their financial survival.
The plan, unveiled Sunday, is intended to signal the government is prepared to take all necessary steps to prevent the credit market troubles that erupted last year with losses from subprime mortgages from engulfing financial markets.
The Fed said it granted the Federal Reserve Bank of New York authority to lend to the two companies "should such lending prove necessary." They would pay 2.25 percent for any borrowed funds -- the same rate given to commercial banks and big Wall Street firms.
The Fed said this should help the companies' ability to "promote the availability of home mortgage credit during a period of stress in financial markets."
Secretary Henry Paulson said the Treasury is seeking expedited authority from Congress to expand its current line of credit to the two companies and make an equity investment in the companies -- if needed.
"Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac play a central role in our housing finance system and must continue to do so in their current form as shareholder-owned companies," Paulson said Sunday. "Their support for the housing market is particularly important as we work through the current housing correction."
The Treasury's plan also seeks a "consultative role" for the Fed in any new regulatory framework eventually decided by Congress for Fannie and Freddie. The Fed's role would be to weigh in on setting capital requirements for the companies.
Sen. Christopher Dodd, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, on Monday called the Bush administration's actions Sunday "probably the right steps" and said he will summon Paulson, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Christopher Cox to a committee hearing to answer questions.
"What's important here as well is to calm people's fears," Dodd said in an interview on CBS' "The Early Show."
He also drew a distinction between last week's failure of IndyMac — which engaged in originating riskier mortgages than traditional community and regional banks — and the two mortgage giants.
"There's a big difference between IndyMac and Fannie and Freddie," Dodd said. "IndyMac engaged in very bad mortgages, luring people into deals they could never afford. That's not the case with Fannie and Freddie." Dodd said that while there may be more bank failures, "I'm more optimistic about Fannie and Freddie than I am about these banks."
The White House, in a statement, said President Bush directed Paulson to "immediately work with Congress" to get the plan enacted. It also said it believed the steps outlined by Paulson "will help add stability during this period."
Investors may not be as sanguine, however, according to Chris Johnson, an investment manager and president of Johnson Research Group in Cleveland. Stocks of financial institutions "are going to get clobbered," he predicted. "It is a situation where regulators and the government are trying to play catch up, and that means everything is not discounted in the stock prices yet."
The Dow Jones industrials on Friday briefly fell below 11,000 for the first time in two years and Johnson said shares of investment banks and regional banks could move even lower as investors react to this weekend's developments.
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac hold or back $5.3 trillion of mortgage debt, about half the outstanding mortgages in the United States.
The government denied it, but what has been seen by investors as an implicit guarantee of support has allowed Fannie and Freddie over the years to borrow at rates only slightly higher than the Treasury -- and lower than what their banking competitors had to pay.
"This really blows away the notion of an implicit guarantee," independent banking consultant Bert Ely said of the Treasury's plan to ask Congress to allow it to make equity investments in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. "It suggests a greater concern about how these companies are doing. It says the problems are deeper. It gets to the solvency of the companies, not just the liquidity."
A critical test of confidence will come Monday morning, when Freddie Mac is slated to auction a combined $3 billion in three- and six-month securities.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said "Senate Democrats stand ready to work with the administration to quickly and effectively address the situation currently facing these institution."
House GOP leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Republican Whip Roy Blunt, R-Mo., said they "stand ready to work with Secretary Paulson and congressional Democrats to take appropriate steps to ensure the soundness of our mortgage markets."
Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama said the government's main concern should be "to make sure that home ownership remains attainable and affordable for American families. Second, any measures should protect taxpayers and not bailout the shareholders and management of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac."
Republican rival John McCain believes the measures announced Sunday "are consistent with the goal of providing support for a path through the current duress toward steps that include regulatory reform, market discipline and mission focus," said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, senior policy adviser.

You Are An Overcomer
God created you to be an overcomer! Sometimes, it's easy to get down and discouraged when things aren't going the way you planned. If you go around thinking, "It's never going to work out" or "It's never going to get better", you limit what God can do. But if, when you face difficulties, you dig your heels in—knowing that God is bigger than your problems—your faith will open the door for God to turn your negative situation around!
Isaiah 54:17 says that, "No weapon formed against you will prosper. This is your heritage as children of the Lord." Notice you have a heritage. You have rights and privileges because you belong to Christ. As long as you keep God first place in your life, you have a hedge of protection around you, a hedge of favor, and a hedge of mercy. When difficulties come, because you are His child and honor Him, those difficulties won't prosper in your life. When it's all said and done, God will take what the enemy meant for evil and turn it around for your good.
Declare over yourself, by faith, that you will overcome every obstacle. Declare that every dream and desire God placed in your heart will come to pass. Declare that you have the favor of God and that whatever you set your hand to will prosper. As you speak those words of faith, the Lord will work on your behalf and you will live as an overcomer all the days of your life!

All Things Are Possible
Today's Scripture
"What is impossible with men is possible with God" (Luke 18:27).
Today's Word from Joel and Victoria
Is there a situation in your life today that seems impossible? As a child of the Most High God, you are not limited by what you see. You are not limited by your circumstances, the economy, or what others say because with God all things are possible! It doesn't matter how it may look in the natural, when you see things through your eyes of faith, you will see new possibilities. You will see the answer that is on its way!
It all starts by having a grateful attitude: an attitude of faith and expectancy. When you declare the promises of God over your life and meditate on His Word, it activates faith in your heart. Faith draws the good things of God into your life. When you wake up every morning, declare that with God all things are possible. Declare that you are blessed and you cannot be cursed. Declare that you are above only and not beneath. Expect God's favor and blessing in your life every day. As you do, you will see Him move on your behalf, and you'll see new levels of possibility in every area of your life!
A Prayer for Today
Father in heaven, thank You for making a way where there seems to be no way. I choose an attitude of faith and expectancy today. Work in my heart and life that I may be a living testimony of Your goodness to those around me. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

| "There's Never Been a Great Woman Artist" (?!) By Andrew Johnson, The Independent
Women artists face prejudice and discrimination, with their works selling for a fraction of the price of their male counterparts, one of the world's leading art dealers claimed yesterday. Iwan Wirth, who represents the French-American artist Louise Bourgeois, whose giant spider, Maman, became a landmark outside Tate Modern in London last year, said the huge gap in prices between the likes of Lucian Freud and Bourgeois was "a constant source of disappointment." Sales in London last week generated a fresh round of head-spinning prices: a Freud for £11.8m and a Jeff Koons sculpture for £13m. By comparison, the South African-born artist Marlene Dumas became the most expensive living woman artist at auction on Tuesday when her work The Visitor sold for £3.2m at Sotheby's. Gilding the Water Lily Nina P. West, Artfact.com
Just as the art world began to settle into its sleepy summer season, Christie's and Sotheby's announced another round of stellar auction results from its London sales rooms. Of particular note: The $80 million sale at Christie's of ''Le Bassin aux Nympheas,'' a classic Monet water lily painting that had not been seen publicly for decades. It now stands as the most expensive work of art ever sold by Christie's in Europe and sets a new record for the artist. The old record, $41 million for ''Le Pont du Chemin de Fer a Argenteuil,'' was set just two months ago in May at Christie's in New York. Click here to continue reading...

| Arts Patrons, The Next Generation By Kathryn Shattuck, The New York Times
The dinner last month at the French Consulate on Fifth Avenue honoring Lin Arison, the Miami arts patron, and her book “Travels With van Gogh and the Impressionists: Discovering the Connections,” seemed like just another night on New York’s high-end art circuit. Luminaries like Agnes Gund, the former president of the Museum of Modern Art, and the patrons Steven and Kimberly Rockefeller studded the guest list. Circulating with the self-assurance of someone who had worked a room for decades was 23-year-old Sarah Arison, granddaughter of the guest of honor and president of the Arison Arts Foundation in Miami. Meanwhile, holding court next to Patsy Tarr, the indefatigable supporter of dance in New York, was her 28-year-old daughter, Jennie Tarr Coyne, a museum educator and the vice president of 2wice Arts Foundation, a group founded by her mother in 1989.Click here to continue reading...

Manifesta
July 19th-November 2nd, 2008, Tretino-South Tyrol, IT www.manifesta7.it
Europe's migrant biennial returns again this year, with a twist. Instead of being a singular, urban event, this installation will be mapped across an entire region of Italy. Lectures, performances, installations and workshops will take place throughout the territory, along the Brenner axis that separates northern and southern Europe. Italy's first Manifesta, then, falls in a region marked by its diversity of cultures and traditions, and thus becomes kind of emblematic of the show's pan-European parameters.

Now, I know anyone who reads this newsletter probably visits Christie's Web site on at least a bi-weekly basis. However, I just thought I'd give their new and improved site a little shout out. It's flashy and shiny, things pop up when you browse over them and you can even easily scroll through their auction calendar without leaving their home page! It also includes videos from the saleroom and (perhaps best of all) a "Start Your Collection" feature that inquires "What's your passion?" How existential! At first the site was slow to load, which made my job much less fun, but now it seems to be up and running beautifully. As a friend recently noted, "Sotheby's is living in the caves, yo!" |

Best: Flashy, fun, informative.
Worst: Other than my issues with the color-faded background, I have no real complaints.
