Dear Roby:
There is no other place like Jerusalem! This is where it all began, and this is where it will end. What a time we have experienced this week as Israel celebrates the 60th anniversary of its rebirth as a nation.
Every time I come to the Holy Land, I always look forward to praying for our precious partners from a rooftop overlooking the Holy City. Join me for this brief postcard as I share upcoming events; then I want to pray for you from the historic land of the Bible.

A moral earthquake had awakened the slumber of ages. The spirit-stirring notes that pealed out from Independence Hall, proclaiming "LIBERTY THROUGHOUT THE LAND TO ALL THE INHABITANTS THEREOF," and causing the most humble to lift up his head with higher hopes and nobler aspirations, were yet echoing through every nook and corner of the land. The revolutionary struggle, in which was involved the great principles of human rights, was still fresh in the minds of all from the least unto the greatest.

Covenant of Peace
Today's Scripture
“And I will make with them a covenant of peace…” (Ezekiel 34:25).
Today's Word from Joel and Victoria
Aren’t you glad we serve a God of peace? No matter what you may be facing in life, God is with you. You don’t ever have to feel anxious, worried, or upset because you have a covenant of peace with Almighty God. God is always faithful to His Word, and you can have confidence that His peace is always available to you. The Bible tells us that God’s peace passes understanding. That means you can have peace when it doesn’t make sense to have peace. When the rest of the world seems to be upset or fretting, you don’t have to be upset. When gas prices go up, you can be at peace knowing that God has promised to supply all your needs according to His riches in glory. When the housing market seems unstable, you can trust that God is your refuge, and He will cause you to dwell in safety. He’ll make a way where there seems to be no way. Begin to thank God for His peace and faithfulness in your life. Declare that the peace of God rules in your heart and mind. As you dwell on God’s promises, your heart will be at rest, and you’ll experience the blessing of His peace all the days of your life.
A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your covenant of peace. I receive it by faith today. I choose to keep my heart and mind fixed on You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

| Classical Realism: Antidote to 'Novelty Art' By Roger Kimball, The Wall Street Journal
In 1959, the critic Clement Greenberg wrote that "the very best painting, the major painting, of our age is almost exclusively abstract." It was a tune Greenberg sang early and often. He said similar things throughout the 1940s, and as late as 1967 insisted that "the very best art of this time continues to be abstract." Let's leave the fraught question of whether Greenberg was correct to one side. What we can say with confidence is that the focus of much artistic energy at the time was centered around abstract art. This has obviously not been the case for some decades. What happened? Several things. On the one hand, there was a powerful upsurge of what Greenberg elsewhere called "novelty art," the 57 varieties of pop, op, minimalism, and neo-Dada performance art that have infested the art world like a gigantic flea market. On the other hand, there was a quieter but no less powerful return to older artistic sources and traditions -- a return, that is to say, to the figure. Click here to continue reading...

Great American Nude Nina P. West, Artfact.com
The resounding success of New York's spring contemporary art auctions have momentarily allayed fears that the art market is in trouble. Christie's and Sotheby's both posted their highest totals ever and announced record-breaking prices for many of today's most legendary artists. The sale of Lucien Freud's 1995 nude ''Benefits Supervisor Sleeping'' for $33.64 million at Christie's is still sending shockwaves through the art world. The provocative painting shattered the record for a work of art by a living artist sold at auction previously held by Jeff Koons' monumental magenta heart. The shiny bauble sold at Sotheby's last November for $23.56 million. Slightly less attention-grabbing, but no less important, was the sale of another nude lady at Sotheby's. Tom Wesselmann's 1963 ''Great American Nude No. 48,'' a pivotal work in the history of modern painting, sold for $10,681,000, a record for this artist. Click here to continue reading...

| Holocaust Historians Blast MFA Stance in Legal Dispute By Geoff Edgers, The Boston Globe
Holocaust historians are criticizing the Boston Museum of Fine Arts for its stance in an escalating legal dispute over the ownership of a valuable 1913 painting. The work, Oskar Kokoschka's "Two Nudes (Lovers)," has hung at the MFA almost continuously since 1973. The dispute began in March 2007, when attorneys for Claudia Seger-Thomschitz, an Austrian woman who says she is the rightful owner of "Two Nudes," approached the museum demanding its return. Lawyers for Seger-Thomschitz, an heir to Jewish art collector Oskar Reichel, say Reichel sold the painting under duress in Nazi-occupied 1939 Vienna. Click here to continue reading... |

Art Basel
June 4th-8th, 2008, Basel, Switzerland www.art.ch/go/id/ss/
Art Basel has been referred to by the New York Times as the "Olympics of the Art World." And each year it seems to live up to its moniker, being bigger, better and more international than any other contemporary art fair. While this year's show will not be couched between the Venice Biennale and Documenta as 2007's was, everyone will be hoping it will continue to demonstrate the art market's success of late. Like the past few installations, the show will be flanked by a couple of satellite shows - Volta, whose focus this year will be on works on paper, and the Young Art Fair, which (as the name suggests) showcases young galleries and young art. It will surely start off the summer with a bang.

No Sleep Till Brooklyn Brooklyn, NY
No, Brooklyn galleries are not a fiction fabricated by the writers of Gossip Girl . And, yes, some damn good art is produced and shown in that New York City borderland. So if you can brave the bridges or the L train, you should hop, skip and jump your way over to the southern borough and check out some up and comers. The scene might be a little bit younger, and maybe a little bit drunker, but you'll see some great work. For example, this Friday Canadian transplant, Brendan Fernandes, has his first New York solo show at Momenta Art in Williamsburg. Expect post-colonial identity politics, African masks, decoy deer, yule logs and probably a few hipsters. Also still hanging at the moment is a group show, From Brooklyn with Love , at Parker's Box, which explores the 23 artists' own personal connections with the borough and its history. And if you really want new, new, new, check out Pocket Utopia and English Kills in Bushwick and see some awesome art in the quickly gentrifying neighborhood (before the yuppies move in...).

Artweek artweek.com
|
The online counterpart to the monthly magazine and "national voice of West Coast contemporary art," Artweek, is admittedly a bit sparse. On the upside, it is a distinctly West Coast voice on the North American contemporary art scene which, as I have often noted, tends to be a little Big Apple biased. It has a thorough listing of West Coast galleries, organized by city, for any newbie or traveller to the vicinity. It also features a list of previews of upcoming shows worth checking out. However, much of the site serves as an advertisement for the magazine itself. For example, none of the editors' reviews actually make it to the net. Furthermore, where are all the pictures, folks? I mean, we're art lovers, right? |
|
Best: A comprehensive listing of West Coast galleries.
Worst: Don't we see enough advertising online?

Developing a Growth Plan
Do you have a plan for personal growth? Are you doing anything intentionally and strategically to better yourself? Understand today that growth is not automatic. You can have success but that doesn’t mean you’ve reached your highest potential. There is always room for increase. There are greater mountains to climb and new frontiers to be explored in life! So many people fall into "destination disease" where they think they have arrived just because they reached a certain goal. They think that since they accomplished something, or got their degree, or a certain position, that they can just kick back and coast on what they’ve already learned. But, in order to continue advancing in life, we have to take responsibility for our own growth. We have to have the attitude, “How can I improve. What can I do to make myself better?
We have to stir up that desire to learn. We should have a goal to grow and learn something new everyday. It can be as simple as, “I’m going to get up every morning and spend the first twenty minutes meditating on God’s Word and thanking Him for what He’s done.” “I’m going to listen to a teaching CD on the way to work.” “At night, I’m going to turn the TV off a little bit earlier and read a book for twenty minutes.” “I’m gong to hook up with my mentor twice a month and go out to lunch.” “I’m going to be at church every weekend.” That’s a growth plan. As you take responsibility for your personal growth, God will honor your efforts. He’ll give you the right breaks. He’ll give you the right opportunities and He’ll help you rise higher and higher. As you continue to grow, you’ll see every dream and desire God has put in your heart, come to pass!

The Kingdom
Today's Scripture
“It is the Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom” (Luke 12:32).
Today's Word from Joel and Victoria
Our God is an extravagant God. He loves to do exceedingly beyond anything we can hope for or imagine! It gives Him pleasure to pour out His abundance and goodness in your life. It gives Him pleasure to give you His Kingdom. What is the Kingdom of God? It’s simply God’s operating system, or His way of doing things. Throughout the Word of God, He reveals His principles and precepts for living the abundant life He has in store. When you follow His Word, when you do things God’s way, you get God’s results; you get His success and blessing. Choose God’s Kingdom today by following the Word of God. Romans chapter 14 tells us that the Kingdom of God is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. Do you need more joy and peace in your life? Follow the Word of God in everything you do and open your heart to His Kingdom. As you do things God’s way, you will get His results and walk in victory and blessing all the days of your life.
A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your hand of blessing in my life. Thank You for giving me Your Kingdom. I receive it by faith today and choose to follow Your Word in everything I do. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

He Prepares Your Path
Today's Scripture
“I will go before you and make the crooked places straight…” (Isaiah 45:2 NKJV)
Today's Word from Joel and Victoria
Do you ever feel like every time you try to move forward in something, you hit a roadblock? Something happens that throws you off course. Be encouraged today because right now in your life, God is going before you. He’s preparing a way. He’s making your crooked places straight. He’s making your rough places smooth. You may be going through a difficult time right now, but it’s not the end. It’s only the beginning. God has equipped you for this journey. You may feel like you’re in a dry season, but don’t look at your circumstances. Look at the promise of God today! If you’ll keep speaking words of faith, God promises that He’ll anoint your head with oil and your cup will run over. That means you’ll be refreshed and anointed to do what He’s called you to do. God is preparing your path and equipping you for the journey. What do you need today to keep moving forward? Start by checking your attitude. Don’t go around complaining and focused on the negative side of things. Put on an attitude of praise and thanksgiving. Thank Him for making your crooked places straight! As you do, you’ll move forward in joy and gladness in the blessed future He has prepared for you!
A Prayer for Today
Lord in heaven, thank You for Your goodness in my life. Thank You for preparing the path for my life and making my crooked places straight. Thank You for restoring my soul and life and for guiding me in everything I do. I submit every area of my life to You today. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

NASA probe sends first pictures from Martian arctic
A NASA probe sent back never-before-seen pictures of Mars' north pole Monday, in the most ambitious mission to date to find if the Red Planet could support life.
After NASA's Phoenix Mars probe made a near perfect landing at the Martian polar region late Sunday, scientists pored over images revealing a desolate frozen tundra.
Given that Mars ' polar region is subject to Earth-like seasonal changes, the scientists think that, like on Earth, the Martian arctic might have a geological record of a warmer, habitable climate.
"We can see cracks in the troughs that make us think the ice is still modifying the surface," said Peter Smith, a lead scientist on the project. "We see fresh cracks. Cracks can't be old. They would fill in," he said.
Scientists said they were also excited about the images taken by the probe during its descent late Sunday into the atmosphere of the Red Planet.
"I'm floored. I'm absolutely floored," said Phoenix Project manager Barry Goldstein of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, as he reviewed the dramatic images.
Phoenix on Monday was to test several of its instruments and systems, while continuing to transmit back to Earth images of its surroundings.
The pictures from the probe confirmed that the solar arrays needed for the mission's energy supply had unfolded properly, as the craft's batteries would have run out in about 30 hours.
The photos also showed masts for the stereo camera and weather station had swung into vertical position as planned, and showed the spacecraft's footpad planted on the dusty surface as well polygonal patterns on the ground that looked similar to icy arctic regions on Earth.
The flat Martian valley floor is expected to have water-rich permafrost within reach of the lander's robotic arm.
"Seeing these images after a successful landing reaffirmed the thorough work over the past five years by a great team," Goldstein told reporters.
After a nine-month journey from Earth, the Phoenix probe touched down in a relatively flat target area.
As planned, Phoenix stopped transmitting signals one minute after landing and focused its limited battery power on opening its solar arrays, and other critical activities.
But a key task still ahead was the first use of the lander's robotic arm, which was planned for Tuesday.
The backhoe-like arm, 2.35 meters (7.7 feet) long, is designed to dig trenches up to one meter (3.3 feet) deep for samples of soil and water ice.
The arm will deliver the samples to instruments aboard the lander for detailed chemical and geological analysis.
The robotic arm also carries a box-shaped camera with a double Gauss lens system like that in 35mm cameras, and two lighting assemblies.
This will take images of the surrounding area and of samples the arm picks up.
Another camera device is the surface stereo imager, what NASA calls Phoenix's "eyes." Sitting two meters (6.6 feet) above the ground, the SSI will produce high-definition and panoramic images of the surrounding landscape.
Its stereo capability will help give scientists on Earth three-dimensional views of the work the robotic arm does. It can also be turned vertically to take images that will provide information on atmospheric particles.
"Only five of our planet's 11 previous attempts to land on the Red Planet have succeeded," said Ed Weiler, NASA associate administrator. "In exploring the universe, we accept some risk in exchange for the potential of great scientific rewards."
Working in the flat circumpolar region known as Vastitas Borealis -- akin to northern Canada in Earth's latitude -- Phoenix, with a panoply of high-tech equipment, will over three months dig below the surface to probe the icy ground for signs of liquid water and organic, life-supporting minerals.
The team had been worried about the high risk of the project, with a roughly 50 percent failure rate on all Mars missions since the Soviet Union launched the first one in 1960.
Dear Colleague,
I wanted to let you know that my new book, The New Paradigm for Financial Markets is now available in hardcover.
In this book I offer my view that the current financial crisis is unparalleled in our history. As I say in the introduction:
To understand what is going on we need a new paradigm. The currently prevailing paradigm, namely that financial markets tend towards equilibrium, is both false and misleading; our current troubles can be largely attributed to the fact that the international financial system has been developed on the basis of that paradigm.
The new paradigm I am proposing is not confined to the financial markets. It deals with the relationship between thinking and reality, and it claims that misconceptions and misinterpretations play a major role in shaping the course of history.
Since the release of my book, I have been conducting interviews in the financial and main stream press. I invite you to visit ( www.georgesoros.com/interviews) to listen to and watch these interviews some of which are highlighted below.

Give Generously
Today's Scripture
“...the righteous give generously ” (Psalm 37:21).
Today's Word from Joel and Victoria
Did you know that when you give to others in need, the Bible says it’s like giving directly to God Himself? When you step out and bless other people, you are honoring and blessing the Lord. The scripture tells us to give our best, to give generously. In other words, stretch yourself. Go out of your way. It may be uncomfortable to walk over and pay for someone’s gas, but that’s being generous. I encourage you today, look for ways to give generously and meet the needs of others. Remember, people have many different types of needs. There may be someone who needs some encouragement. Give generously when you give that encouragement. There may be someone in your life who just needs a friend. They need some quality time. Give generously of your time and pour into that person. As you give generously to others, God will multiply the seeds you’ve sown, and you’ll live in blessing all the days of your life.
A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, I come to You today, giving all that I have to You. Open my eyes to the needs around me and show me how to be a blessing to others. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

God’s Representative
Today's Scripture
“We are Christ’s Ambassadors…” (II Corinthians 5:20).
Today's Word from Joel and Victoria
As believers in Jesus, we are His ambassadors or representatives in the earth. In the natural, an ambassador is privileged. They are a diplomat with the highest rank. They walk in the authority of the name of the one who sent them. The ambassador makes decisions and solves problems, but their primary role is to promote diplomatic relationships. As God’s ambassadors in the earth, we walk in His power and authority. We are to promote relationship with Him. The Bible also calls us “ministers of reconciliation” in the earth. That means that we are to share the message of the gospel—that man’s relationship to God has been reconciled through Jesus Christ. When you see yourself as God’s ambassador, it will change the way you think and act. It will change the way you approach people. Remember, you are a representative of Almighty God. Look for ways to promote relationship with Him. Show kindness because His kindness leads people to change. Speak words of healing that will draw people to Him. As you fulfill your role as an ambassador of God, He will honor your faithfulness and pour out His blessing upon you all the days of your life.
A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank You for choosing me as Your ambassador. Help me to fully understand the authority You’ve given. Show me ways to promote relationship with You and build Your kingdom in the earth. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Myanmar cyclone victims vote on eve of aid conference
Myanmar opened polls for hundreds of thousands of cyclone victims, many hungry, homeless and still waiting for aid, in a much-criticised constitutional referendum Saturday ahead of a key donors' conference.
Voters who have been struggling to stave off starvation and disease since the May 2-3 disaster, which left 133,000 dead or missing, left ramshackle shelters and patched-up homes to cast ballots on the military-backed constitution.
The outcome of the balloting has already been decided, after the junta declared an overwhelming victory in the first round of voting on May 10, held in parts of the country spared by the cyclone.
The vote comes on weekend of intense diplomatic activity in one of the world's poorest and most isolated countries, which is still reeling from the storm three weeks ago.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon left Myanmar on Friday, saying that he had finally won permission from junta leader Than Shwe for foreign aid workers to enter the country to oversee the relief effort.
The announcement could end a deadlock over the relief effort, and set a more positive tone when Ban returns Sunday for the donors' meeting hosted by the United Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
The United Nations has already launched an appeal for 187 million dollars to fund a relief effort, but Myanmar has put the total storm damage at 11.7 billion dollars.
Ban is avoiding being in the country during the vote on the constitution, which the junta says will pave the way for democratic elections in 2010. Critics say it will only entrench military rule.
This weekend the regime is also set to extend the house arrest of celebrated democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, whose detention comes up for renewal by Monday.
Until the cyclone, winning her freedom had been a key concern of Western countries, which have imposed sanctions on the regime to press for her release.
But political concerns in Myanmar have now taken a back seat to the urgent humanitarian needs of 2.4 million cyclone victims in desperate need of food, shelter and medicine.
Earlier Ban had called on the regime to delay the voting and to focus its resources on helping storm victims, but on his trip here he did not mention the polls or Aung San Suu Kyi.
The junta did postpone balloting in parts of the county hit hardest by the storm, but insisted on going ahead with the second round Saturday, despite the human tragedy in the Irrawaddy Delta, where entire villages were washed away by the storm.
Only 25 percent of the people in need have actually received any help, according to the United Nations, creating the prospect that some storm victims could receive ballot papers before getting any aid.
People whose homes were destroyed have told AFP they were forced out of schools where they had sought shelter, so that the classrooms can be used as polling stations.
And the few evacuees lucky enough to live in emergency shelters say authorities have combed through the camps to register everyone over 18 to vote.
Security forces have blocked most foreigners from the hardest-hit regions of the delta, but AFP reporters who have slipped in say that the people are still hungry and homeless, and that some bodies are still floating in the water.
The junta is "still determined to have their referendum when they haven't cleaned up the bodies yet," said Sunai Phasuk, a researcher with Human Rights Watch in Bangkok.
"They want to show that they are in control of the situation," Sunai said, adding that the regime would take no chances on the outcome of the vote.
"They can manufacture the results as what they want. They can fabricate the numbers," Sunai said.
Aung San Suu Kyi's party has urged voters to reject the constitution, which they say will enshrine military rule.
The vote to approve a new constitution is the first balloting in Myanmar since a general election in 1990, when Aung San Suu Kyi's party won in a landslide but she was placed under house arrest.
The new charter would ban Aung San Suu Kyi from ever holding office, while granting the military broad powers to declare a state of emergency and take direct control of the government.
Most people in Yangon were already resigned to the outcome of the poll.
"They won already," a 35-year-old taxi driver said. "My vote is nothing for them." " in freedom of speach and freedom of thinking, people should be allowed to have their own philosophy and understanding, right ? and by freedom of expression, people should be allowed to exercise their philosophy and understanding about a lot of things. well, according to my opinion, there is a crystal clear difference among gambling, game/sport/quiz, investments, trading, and speculation.
Gambling is: when you put your resources (it could be time, muscle, brain, money, etc) on something, where you have 0% control to make sure what you will get or to get the prize.
Game/Sport/Quiz is: when put your resources on something, where you have 100% control to make sure what you will get or to win the prize, by becoming the fastest, or strongest, biggest, the most smart, etc. There are two kind of Game/Sport/Quiz, they are brain and muscle based game/sport/quiz.
Investments is: when you put your resources on something, just like when you buy 1 US Dollar bank note with 80 cents price. Or, you buy 1 US Dollar bank note with 1 US Dollar price, but it will give you 5, 10 or 15 cents back each year (after inflation of course ).
Trading is: when you make 2 different deals at the (almost) same time, first deal is sell deal, and second deal is buy deal. At the time you made the deal, you have been able to calculate how much trading profit you will get.
Speculation is: when you put your resources on something, you expect you will get profit from it when that something's price go lower or higher. But, you have about 50% control about it. "

What will be the lasting impression from this summer's Beijing Olympic games: glorious athletics or divisive politics? What of the impact on the Chinese people themselves? Will their pride as hosts to a global spectacle bring lasting benefits, or possible frustration beyond the closing ceremony? Did awarding the games to Beijing, with all the attendant political controversy, help or harm the relevance and prestige of the Olympics?

Sealed By God
Today's Scripture
“…I will make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you,' declares the LORD Almighty” (Haggai 2:23).
Today's Word from Joel and Victoria
We don’t often hear about signet rings anymore; but in Bible times, they were very significant. The signet ring was used to identify the message or messenger and the authority they had. In other words, you knew something was from the king because it was marked by His signet ring. It was representative of power and authority. This verse is saying that you are the mark of authority of Almighty God. You have been chosen and set apart to be identified with Him. When you have someone’s power and authority, you have access to everything they have. It’s like having power of attorney; you have the authority to act on behalf of that individual. As a believer in Jesus, marked with His seal, think of all you have access to today. Think about the authority you have. Everything He has is available to you—healing, provision, strength, peace, joy. You have been given authority to “sign His name” in order to receive His blessings. You are God’s seal, and you are marked to live the abundant life He has in store for you!
A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank You for choosing me and calling me Your own. Help me to fully understand the authority You’ve given by Your Son Jesus. I receive all You have for me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
